About

Our Mission

Hawa Matcha is a Brooklyn-based tea company that sources award-winning matcha from celebrated tea farms in Japan.

The finest matcha is produced in rural, isolated regions by family-owned farms dedicated to perfecting cultivation. Their teas rarely reach the global market because limited yields and deep local demand keep them close to home. By building direct relationships with these producers, we ensure that the best matcha—often enjoyed only within Japan—becomes accessible to you.

Premium Single-Origin Matcha

Our single-origin matcha comes from Japan's most prized tea regions, where historic terroir, local microclimates, and traditional cultivation techniques yield extraordinary teas. Though our matcha would qualify as "ceremonial grade" by most industry conventions, we prefer to describe it as suitable for usucha (thin tea) or koicha (thick tea)—a more precise representation of its quality and intended use.

Matcha quality starts in the tea fields—it's shaped by harvest timing, shading method, cultivar, and how tencha leaves are selected during processing. But the final measure is gogumi, the tea master's art of blending tencha, a craft passed down through generations. Producers submit their finest blends to Japan's National Tea Competition (Zenkoku Cha Hinpyokai), held annually by the Ministry of Agriculture, where quality is formally evaluated.

"Ceremonial grade" has no regulated definition, which means any brand can use the term regardless of actual quality. Our approach is to list the specific producer, region, and cultivar for every tea we carry, letting you evaluate quality based on the criteria that matter most.
